Marcy Smith Cage Workout Machine Assembly Instructions
ASSEMBLY: No exercise equipment assembly is easy. However, Marcy Smith Cage assembly is not as complex as people make if assuming you follow a few basic steps.
You can’t just rip open all packets and expect to discover what you need when you get to a given phase. It is critical to stay organized and refer to the page that specifies each procedure and refer to pages that show each part and its identifying number.
There are a total of three boxes. Boxes 1 and 2 should be opened first because they include all of the parts for the smith machine. Box 3 of 3 is exclusively for the bench, so leave it alone till you’ve finished the smith machine. Organize your smith machine pieces into a staging area and match together any identical elements, as you will be building two sides of the smith machine. Do not hand tighten the bolts unless instructed otherwise. If you tighten the bolts too soon, aligning the components in the following phases will be difficult.
The assembly of the cable system is the most challenging component of manufacturing the smith machine. You will need to take your time and carefully follow those steps. Because the cabling is entangled, you must separate the cables as they are required in different processes. The only bothersome aspect of the cabling was that it was so tightly wound that I had difficulty straightening it out for the installation. So, if you have a method to stretch those out when assembling the smith machine framework, I would recommend doing so. Once all of the pieces are together, make sure to tighten them according to the directions.
Overall, it’s a pretty well-made and robust product. It’s not commercial gym quality, but it’s well worth the price. Now, let’s talk about how the gym works.
SMITH: The overall operation of the gym is rather satisfactory. One of my favorite features is the smith press, which is incredibly smooth. The “catch” feature on the smith machine works quite well and allows you to fasten the bar at various heights while working out easily.
PREACHER/LEG ATTACHMENT: The preacher’s curl attachment glides effortlessly across the skin. You don’t get a full range of motion, but your arms are “engaged” throughout the movement, which is positive. You can also use a conventional curl bar with the preacher if it is set at the proper height, which I use to mix things up. Leg workouts are also quite adequate, and you can do both leg curls and extensions on the device.
PULLEYS: The pulley system leaves something desired, so I gave the item three stars. When you let the weights return to their original position, I find the tension insufficient. For example, when performing tricep pushdowns, there is good tension on the way down, but the pulley system appears to lack a “smooth glide” back to the starting position. I was using about 50 pounds (equally divided on either side of the weight holders (which is critical for this system), so the action should have been considerably smoother.
BENCH: The bench is superb in terms of quality and has a variety of positions available, including decline, which is fantastic. I wish it had wheels on one end so it could be moved around more easily. It’s still manageable because it isn’t as heavy as a commercial bench. My only criticism about the bench is the “pin” that holds it in place. Because the “pin” must be screwed into place, adjusting bench angles takes a little longer. I wish this were more of a hinge pin so that I could change positions more quickly.
ATTACHMENTS: All pulley attachments are pretty nice and of high quality.
WEIGHT HOLDERS: The weight holders on the cage’s sides are ideal for storing weights while not in use. They are steel bars, and you must install plastic sleeves over them during installation to place the Olympic weight plates. Because all bars include these “sleeves” (smith, pulley weight holder, etc.), this device could also be utilized with standard weights.
